Eminent domain laws continue to be hotly debated across the country, including here in Washington.

Lawmakers in Olympia are considering bills that would forbid the use of eminent domain to promote economic development.

State Reps. Larry Springer, D-Kirkland, Jan Angel, (R-Port Orchard), Christine Rolfes, (D-Bainbridge Island), and Matt Shea (R-Spokane Valley) are among those sponsoring legislation changing Washington’s eminent domain laws.

Washington drivers now face tougher penalties for failure to move over or slow down for police, fire, tow truck drivers and others stopped on the roadway with emergency lights activated.

A steady increase in the number of emergency and road construction workers injured or killed after being hit by passing motorists prompted passage of the new law, according to the Washington State Patrol.

A new law expands the state’s 2007 "emergency zone" law that established a 200-foot buffer around emergency vehicles stopped on roadways with lights on. As of January 1, 2011, the designation also applies to Department of Transportation crews and tow trucks.

Under the law, drivers must yield to emergency and highway construction crews by changing lanes if it's safe to do so, or slowing down if they are unable to move over.

Motorists who fail to obey the law may be fined $248, have their driver’s license suspended for up to 90 days, be charged with reckless endangerment and, if convicted, be sentenced to jail.
